Funeral services: Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Atlantic, IA. Burial was in the Atlantic Cemetery, Atlantic, IA.

Survived by: Husband of 67 years, Roger; brother, Calvin (spouse, Phyllis) Hoegh of Elk Horn, IA; sister-in-law, Izy Hoegh of Atlantic, IA; children: Judith Schrader of Elk Horn, IA, Ken Hansen of Council Bluffs, IA, Connie Steen (spouse, Scott Marshall) of Greenfield, IA, Jeff Hansen of Iowa City, IA, Lori Harris (spouse, Gary Boswell) of Corning, IA, and Darla Hansen of Elk Horn, IA; 13 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, step-great and step-great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other friends and family members

Predeceased by: Parents, Christena (nee Jorgensen) and Edward Hoegh; infant son, Steve in 1955; brother, Dale Hoegh, and sister-in-law, Jean; brother, Emery Hoegh; sister, Velma Hansen and brother-in-law, Ralph Hansen; and son-in-law, Mark Miller

Education: attended country school at Smokey Hill in Audubon County; Mardell (as she was known) was unable to attend high school after she became ill with Typhoid Fever, and was then needed on the family farm. She received her GED, completing it as a young mother.

Marriage: George Roger Hansen, April 14, 1946, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic, IA

Employment: With her husband, they farmed north of Atlantic for 33 years.

Hobbies/Interests: Mardell loved to be outside and grew a large garden; she did a lot of canning and was a great cook, sharing her bounty with her growing family. Mardell taught herself to play the organ, and could play beautifully by ear. She could also play the accordion. With Roger on drums, together they spent hours entertaining residents at many nursing homes. After their retirement, Roger and Mardell enjoyed traveling in their camper throughout the lower 48 states. She also liked to sew, making quilts for all her grandchildren; she loved flowers and birds and watching “The Price Is Right.” Mardell enjoyed playing games, particularly dominoes. She had a fun sense of humor, always slapping her knee when she laughed.
