Funeral services: Wednesday, June 14, 2006, Peace United Church of Christ, Walnut, IA; Pastor Gail Muckey officiated. Burial was in the Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, IA.

Survived by: Son, Stan (spouse, Veretta) Johannsen of Harlan, IA; daughters, Barb (spouse, John) Eilts of Grand Island, NE, and Marlene (spouse, Edward) Marshall of Omaha, NE; daughter-in-law, Cathy Johannsen of Harlan, IA; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Marx Jurgen and Minnie Louise (nee Lensch) Koos; husband, Arnold Johannsen (deceased Dec. 28, 1987); brother, Orvy Koos; son, Darryl Johannsen; granddaughters, Tamara Johannsen and Shelly Lewis; grandson-in-law, Dan Schreiber

Education: attended school at Layton Township #5 and Walnut, IA; graduated from Walnut (IA) High School, Class of 1930, with normal teachers’ training

Religious affiliation: baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, now the Peace United Church of Christ, in Walnut, IA

Marriage: Arnold Christian Johannsen, June 13, 1934, at her parents’ home in Walnut, IA

Employment: After graduation, Maxine taught school for a brief time in Layton and Lincoln Townships in Pottawattamie County. In addition, she worked at the original Bakers Grocery Store in Walnut, and later, at the Danish Inn in Elk Horn, IA. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Monroe Township and farmed.

Hobbies/Interests: active in her church (Evangelical Lutheran Church), helping with the Women’s Guild, singing in the choir, and teaching Sunday school. Since 1932, Maxine was a member of the Rebekah Lodge where she was Past Noble Grand. She was a member of the Myrtue Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Birthday Pinochle Club, and the Monroe Friday Club; additionally, she was a former leader of the Monroe Merry Makers 4-H Club. Maxine enjoyed knitting, having made sweaters, slippers, afghans, and Christmas stockings for family and friends. She and Arnold enjoyed spending time at their trailer in Lake View, IA, and they worked the concession stand and registered campers at Prairie Rose Lake for many years.
