Died: Oct. 2, 2006, Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE

Funeral services: Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Heather Ploen officiated. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, IA.

Survived by: Son, Keith Lee Johnson of Scotia, NY; granddaughters, Stephanie (spouse, Franklin Nichols) Johnson of Pilot Mountain, NC, and Kimberly (spouse, Robert) Lewis of Burnt Hills, NY; grandson, Hylon (spouse, Anita Pilkerton-Plumb) Plumb IV of Lancaster, PA; great-grandsons, Hylon Theron Plumb V of Lancaster, PA, and Nicholas Theodore Deen Johnson of Pilot Mountain, NC; great-granddaughter, Jenna Nichols of Pilot Mountain, NC; other relatives and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Holger and Agnetta (nee Jorgenson) Pedersen; husband, Keith D. Johnson (deceased May 12, 1992); daughter, Cheryl Plumb; brothers, Russell Pedersen, Ralph Pedersen, and Clifford Pedersen; sister, Esther Olson.

Education: graduated from Kirkman (Iowa) High School, Class of 1936; attended summer school in Cedar Falls, IA, to obtain her teaching certificate. Earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Drake University in 1962.

Marriage: Keith Deen Johnson, June 3, 1941, Omaha, NE

Employment: After receiving her initial teaching certificate, Bernice taught country school north of Irwin, IA., for 4 years. After her marriage and living for a time in California, Bernice returned to Harlan with Keith in 1954. She once again taught: first at rural schools and then at Laurel School in Harlan, IA. She worked on receiving her degree and continued to teach until her retirement in 1980.

Hobbies/Interests: member, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, IA; was active in the quilting group and Bible studies. Life member, National Education Association; active volunteer, Danish Immigrant Museum in Elk Horn, IA; loved to travel and camp with her husband; also enjoyed sewing.
