In 1990, they built a home in Elk Horn, IA, where they lived until their retirement in 2005, when they moved to the Harlan Retirement Home. Elmer briefly lived at Peace Haven Retirement Home, Walnut, IA, before moving to the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center.

Hobbies/Interests: member and served as president of the Kirkman Consolidated School Board; raised purebred hogs; raised and showed ponies and participated in local parades; traveled with spouse, including trips to Denmark to visit Elmer’s cousins, including a childhood visit in 1913 by ship; with spouse of 70 years, enjoyed their home, family, neighbors and many friends
