Funeral services: Wednesday, May 4, 2011; Shelby United Methodist Church, Shelby, IA; Pastor Orris L. Drake and Jim Boardman officiated; burial at Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, IA.

Survived by: Husband of 64 years, John Barrett of Shelby, IA; daughter, Phyllis (spouse, Don) Barkhaus of Altoona, IA; son, Tim (spouse, LuAnn) Barrett of Shelby, IA; daughter-in-law, Becky Barrett of Shelby, IA; sister, Grace Tindall of OR; brothers, Eddie Holdsworth of Arcadia, IA, and Melvin (spouse, Clarion) Holdsworth of Denison, IA; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends

Predeceased by: parents, Edward and Emma (nee Jurgensen) Holdsworth; brother, John Holdsworth; sons, Richard Barrett and Darrell Barrett.

Education: Fairview Township school, Shelby Co., IA; then school in Tennant, IA, graduating with the Class of 1939; Jennie Edmondson Registered Nurses Training Program in Council Bluffs, IA, 1943

Marriage: John Calvin Barrett, April 6, 1947, at her parents’ home in Manilla, IA; ceremony officiated by her cousin, Pastor Carl Holdsworth

Employment: After marriage, they moved onto John’s parents’ farm, later taking over the farming operation; Helen helped on the farm and took care of the garden and chickens. Also worked as an RN at Myrtue Medical Center and the Shelby Medical Clinic for many years; retired in 1987

Hobbies/Interests: active member, Shelby United Methodist Church, Shelby, IA; enjoyed canning, sewing, and painting pictures; active volunteer to area organizations; was a blood donor for many years
