OBITUARY ~ KELLY JOSEPH MONAGHAN
April 07, 1956 ~ February 15, 2014

Kelly Joseph Monaghan was born April 7th, 1956 in the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr to Robert and Ruth Ann (Ward) Monaghan. Kelly was welcomed in by older twin brothers, Mike and Pat and later joined by younger siblings Casey & Katie.

The family lived in Mount Ayr through Kelly's childhood; a childhood filled with cub scouts, swimming, skating, and sports like tennis and basketball at the old high school playground or tackle football in the vacant lot of the Presbyterian church. Kelly graduated from Mount Ayr Community High School as part of the 1974 graduating class.

In 1981, Kelly married Jackie Cavender (Reimer) and for several years enjoyed the role of step-father to her children Tony & Shannon. Kelly and Jackie moved their family to Creston, where Kelly first worked for Wellman Dynamics. In June of 1992, Kelly changed venue and began working for Bunn-o-Matic, where he worked up to his death.

Kelly was a private man, with noteable, humorous wit, and kind. His circle of friends was broad through work and play. This Irish patriot was often found at his local hangouts, Pine Valley Golf Course, the Legion, and the Eagles, where he truly appreciated the people he shared his time with. Usually dressed in shorts, year round, and always known for his signature green clothing, Kelly sported his favorite "Green" teams, the Jets and the Celtics, even when they weren't winning, which was quite often. His zeal for his favorite holiday, St. Patrick's Day, stemmed from his Irish heritage, but he was also a well known package shaker at Christmas, often luring in the nieces and nephews to help with the hunt for his Christmas gift.

He appreciated the small things in life like good home cooking, mashed potatoes and gravy, chocolate in any form, a car that started on cold days, and finishing hole #4 at Pine Valley in single digits and dry. (both him and the ball)

Kelly passed away February 15th, in the Creston hospital following complications from an accident. Preceding him in death are his parents, Robert & Ruth, younger brother Casey Monaghan and older brother Pat Monaghan. Surviving him are older brother Mike Monaghan of Des Moines, sister Katie Still (Ronch) and children Cassie, Jesse, and Jake of Mount Ayr; sister in law Charlene Lee and children Nicole Supinger and Jamie Holmes (Chad), great nephews Tristan, Darrian, and Kaidan Holmes and Robbie and Scout Supinger, great nieces Rhianna and Chaddlan Supinger; and a multitude of extended family and friends.

A memorial fund has been established in his name to be decided later.

Services were held at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr on Thursday, February 20, 2014, with Rev. Skip Rushing officiating.

Musical selections included "Pieces of April," "In The Garden" and "Hole in the World."

Casket bearers were Wayne Ward, Rob Ward, Jacob Still, Jesse Still and Chad Holmes.

Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr.
