J. Rew, son of John H and Marcia Butt Yaryan, was born September 9, 1915, at Knowlton IA, moving to Diagonal with the family when he was a small boy.
He attended the public school in Diagonal graduating from the high school with the class of 1933.
He served in the United States Army during World War II, and remained in Germany after the conflict as chief medical officer for the US zone of the United Nations Rehabilitation and Relief administration. He returned to the States in 1947 and in May of 1948 opened a Dairy queen store in Boone.
Jay R Yaryan and Crystal Louis Moore were married on June 14, 1948, and have since made their home in Boone excepting for last year when they lived in Marshalltown returning to their Boone home this summer.
On June 6, 1966, he was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in education by Drake University and following this taught social studies and was assistant coach at Miller junior High school in Marshalltown for two years. He had contracted to teach and coach in the junior high in Boone this school year.
He had many interests and hobbies throughout his life, having been keenly interested in athletics as a participant and a spectator, playing professional baseball on the west coast as a young man. He held a greater interest in people and was happiest when able to help others.
Jay R. Yaryan died very suddenly at his home August 22, 1968 a few weeks before his 53rd birthday. He is survived by his wife, Crystal, his sister Marie Yaryan of Des Moines, and an aunt, Mrs. Clarence Ives of Mt. Ayr, two nieces and three nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in Boone, with graveside services at Knowlton cemetery.
