Francis Ward Butt, son of John and Hattie Place Butt was born November 21, 1898 in Jefferson Township Ringgold County IA, where he went to school at Jefferson Center. On Sept. 9, 1918 he was united in marriage with Della Mae Rhone, the wedding taking place at Creston.
For 41 years they made their home in Detroit MI, where he was employed by the Ford Motor company for 20 years, and was self-employed for ten years when he operated a grocery store. Upon retirement in 1963 Mr. & Mrs. Butt moved to Diagonal, where he improved the home they purchased and also did cabinetmaking.
Four daughters were born to the family, with Marjorie Marie passing away at the age of three year; Helen Jean who died when three months old, Maxine and Geraldine who survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother James, and a sister Ina, who died in infancy, another sister, Retta, and another brother Elvis. One brother Walter of Detroit, survives.
Besides his wife, Della he is also survived by two daughters and their families: Alfred and Maxine Carson and their children, Paul, Karen and Kevin of Angola IN; Wilfred and Geraldine Carson and their children, Judith, Michael, Terry Lee, Carol and Susan of Detroit MI.
Among the members of the family, by his neighbors and friends, Mr. Butt is remembered for his steady kindness, his unhurried and painstaking way with his work, always trying for perfection.
These qualities marked all of his life including the final two months when he and his wife moved to Angola IN to be near a daughter. Death came suddenly three months before his 74th birthday, August 29, 1972, just as he was completing arrangements for the new home.
Funeral services were held Friday from the Diagonal Christian church; Interment was in Shannon City cemetery
