Whitmore, Nellie Alice Bruner -
Nellie Alice Whitmore, the fifth child of Daniel and Mary Blanche Knox Bruner was born September 11, 1910 on the family farm in Taylor County, Iowa. She joined our Lord and her husband, Lester on February 27, 1998 at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mt. Ayr, Iowa at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 17 days.
She was raised on the family farm in Taylor County and attended Cornbread College and later Clearfield Public Schools.
At an early age she became a member of Greenwood Church, later joining Clearfield United Methodist Church where she served as superintendent of Sunday School for many years.
Alice pursued and received her teaching Certificate in Bedford and started teaching November 11, 1927, two months after turning seventeen. She taught K-8 at Grant Center School located one and one-half miles from her home. She often made her trips to and from school on horseback.
On May 27, 1933 Alice and Lester Whitmore were united in marriage at the Bruner farm. They were blessed with four children: Max Eugene, Donald Bailey, Gary Lee and Vicki Sue.
Alice spent the next 25 years devoting her time to the care of her family.
She hung wallpaper for 25 cents per roll, and later worked at the Variety Store, later called the A to Z before starting as a nurse's aide at the Clearview Home. Alice retired after 20 years, serving as a nurse's aide and later Activities Director to care for Lester who was in failing health.
After Lester passed away in 1981, Alice devoted her retirement years to sewing flannel shirts, knitting hundreds of sweaters, piecing beautiful quilts for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lester, one grandson Lucas Paul, one brother Roland and one sister, Marietta Abarr.
She is survived by three sons, Max and wife Kathy of Donna, TX; Don and wife, Sandy of Conroe, TX and Gary and wife, Peg of Entiat, WA; one daughter, Vicki and husband, Ken Yoder of Iowa City, IA; one brother, Fred of Clearfield; four sisters, Bernice Wiley of Clearfield; Ruth Sundell of Lenox; Mildred Matthews and Helen Lyddon of Clearfield, as well as 18 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. A person's wealth can be measured by the love of their children.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 2, 1998 with the Rev. Alan Rusk officiating.
Music was provided by Patty Parrish, organist for the congregation and Julie Scott, great niece, accompanied by Barb Scott, niece.
Casketbearers were Brent Whitmore, Dan Whitmore, Paul Whitmore, Jeff Whitmore, Marty Whitmore, Jon Whitmore, Lance Bolton, Greg Whitmore, and Mike Whitmore.
Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery at Clearfield, Iowa.
Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
