Stephens, Bernetta Cordelia Roe -
Bernetta Cordelia Stephens, daughter of Curtis Zelmer Roe and Eula Mae Robbins Roe, was born July 17, 1910, in Farley, Missouri. She departed this life at the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, on March 1, 1997, at the age of 86 years, seven months, and 12 days.
After her graduation from high school, Bernetta taught school for a short time and then became employed by the telephone company which was later to become Contel of Iowa. She was to work for this company until her retirement.
She was united in marriage to Merle Everett Stephens on September 24, 1939, and to this union were born two sons, Dick of Clearfield, Iowa, and Dale of Grinnell, Iowa.
After her retirement, Bernetta and Merle traveled some and went to California to see relatives and into Kansas to Merle's birthplace. They never were able to travel extensively because of Merle's health.
From an early age Bernetta became very involved in the Methodist Church and in church activities and these associations through the church composed a large part of her life. She was a devoted Christian and contributed many hours to the United Methodist Women organization and other church activities. She enjoyed her membership and treasured the friends in her "Modern Mother's Club" which met at least monthly.
She spent a great deal of time creating quilts for each of their grandchildren which she gave to them as they grew up.
Several Christmas Eves were spent helping to prepare for the coming of Santa in the homes of the grandchildren.
Following brain surgery in 1965, Bernetta spent several quality years with her family before her health forced her to make use of the excellent care provided at the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr. She moved to Clearview in 1988 where she remained until her death.
Bernetta was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Merle, her sister Mary Newton, her brothers Curtis Roe of Boulder, Colorado and Elmo Roe of Mount Ayr and a niece Trudy Newton. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Dale and Dick, her daughters-in-law, Tenette and Jeanne, her grandchildren Mark, Sonia, Scott, and Darin, her great grandchildren Conner, Lane, and Ember, her brother Bob and wife Bea Roe, a sister-in-law, Fra Roe, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 6, 1997, at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr, Iowa, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Druhl and Rev. Merlin Wilkins officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Gregg Cannon, Mrs. Robert Fisher, and Mrs. Jim Jones. Casketbearers were Dan Roe, Royce Dredge, Eric Dredge, Jerry Carpenter, Steve Roe, and Pat Weeda.
