After their marriage the SHAFERS farmed for 12 years between Blockton and Redding. In 1927 they moved to Mount Ayr where Day started the West End Service Station. His son-in-law, John DENHART, took over the station in 1950 and Day and Vergie moved to Clarinda. There Day served as a salesman for the Newton Manufacturing Company until he retired in 1974.

He was a member of the Mount Ayr United Methodist Church and later transferred to the Trinity United Methodist Church in Clarinda. He was also a member and past master of Faith Lodge No. 179 and he served as a district lecturer for several years. He was a past patron of the Order of the Eastern STar and a past watchman of the shepherds of the White Shrine.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a grandson and a brother, Olin.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Vada and her husband, John DENHART of Mount Ayr; his granddaughter, Sybil, and her husband, Billie KELLEY of Brooklyn, Iowa, and their sons, Kurtis and Karlin KELLEY. Also surviving are one sister, Jessie FLEMING of Carmel Valley, Calif., and two brothers, Roy SHAFER and Milo SHAFER, both of Des Moines; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was a very kind, quiet, unassuming person. He took great pride in his family and their achievements. He will be greatly missed by family members and friends.
