OBITUARY ~ LEONARD GLEASON SCHLAPIA

Leonard Gleason SCHLAPIA, 90, died Friday, May 4, 1990 at the University of Michigan hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. SCHLAPIA was born in Mount Ayr, Iowa, the youngest son of Charles Wellington and Attie (GLEASON) SCHLAPIA, on May 2, 1900.

He married Grace Elaine KUJATH on September 16, 1922, in Des Moines, Iowa. She preceded him in death on December 1, 1984. Also preceding him in death were a son, Lowell Leonard SCHLAPIA; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, and four brothers.

He is survived by two daughters, Iris Elaine STEPHENS of Maryville, Missouri, and Eileen Attie DETHLOFF of Fenton, Michigan; one son, Delmar Dean SCHLAPIA of Algona, Iowa; one cousin, Addie HOFFMAN, of Mount Ayr, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons, and several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Regular Baptist Church in Mount Ayr, Iowa, as long as his health permitted. He was a veteran of WWI and a member of the American Legion Post in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Mr. SCHLAPIA was a farmer in his early years and farmed the family homestead until moving to Mount Ayr. He helped in the construction of the Ringgold County Hospital and continued on as custodian. He then worked as a custodian at the United States Post Office in Mount Ayr until his retiredment at age 72.

Mr. SCHLAPIA will be remembered for his deep faith in God, his loving affection for his family and friends, his soft manner and quick wit. He kept his mind alert to all current news events and it was always a pleasure to visit with him about current as well as past events.

He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were held May 8, 1990, from the Regular Baptist Church in Mount Ayr, Iowa, conducted by Pastor Dennis REYNOLDS.

Music was provided by Sue PERRY, Diane GOOLD, Susanne STAMPER and Beverly KLOCKO.

Casketbearers were Tim KLOCKO, Larry StAMPER, Gary SCHLAPIA, David SCHLAPIA, Daryl SCHLAPIA and Leonard STEPHENS. Honorary pallbearers were Mark SPECK, Doug EGGERS, Tim PALINKAS, Clarence GOOLD and William ROETHLER. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr, Iowa.
