OBITUARY ~ CLARENCE EMERY SALTZMAN

Clarence Emery SALTZMAN, one of 10 children of Joe and Emma BROWN SALTZMAN, was born March 31, 1895, two miles south of Mount Ayr, and passed away at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr on May 6, 1982; aged 87 years, one month and five days. His school years were spent in a country school south of Mount Ayr. He, with his mother, father, sisters and brothers all attended Fry Chapel church every Sunday. He was an avid rock collector and in later years, his hobby was wood carving which he gave to friends.

On Dec. 24, 1917 he was united in marriage to Bessie JARRED. In 1919 they migrated to Oneida, Kan. in a covered wagon which they made themselves. They were blessed with five children, Melvin Wesley, Dorotha Arlene, Donald Elton, Edwin Joe and Betty Jean.

He served in World War I, Co. G. 23rd Infantry and was in the Argonne Meuse Battle. After the Armistice he was sent to the army of occupation in Germany and was in France, Belgium and Luxemburg. He was honorably discharged in September, 1919.

His married life was spent in Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and finally settling in California where his wife Bessie, passed away. Later he came back to Iowa and was married to Kathryn POORE of Tingley, Iowa. After her death he met Lenore CAVENDER on May 6, 1970. They made their home at Delphos, Iowa until his health failed. He resided at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr until his death.

Those close to him remember him best by seeing him reading his beloved Bible every day until his eyesight failed. While at Clearview Home he attended Sunday School and Church each week that he was able.

He was a kind, loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much.

Preceding him in death was his first love, Bessie; two infant children, Melvin Wesley and Betty Jean; his parents; five brothers; three sisters, and one infant grandchild.

Those who remain to cherish his memory are his wife, Lenore; one daughter, Mrs. Ralph CRAMER of La Habra, Calif.; two sons, Donald of Pacifica, Calif., Edwin of Monticella, Utah; one brother, Owen of Waterloo, Iowa; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-daughters; several in-laws, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were held Saturday afternoon, May 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, with Reverend Norman NOBLE conducting. Mrs. Robert FISHER and Mrs. Jim JONES were vocalists with Mrs. Robert THOMAS as organist. Casketbearers were Merle WALTER, Jerry PRITCHETT, Leland SAVILLE, Lloyd STEPHENS, Darrell STEWART and Don E. STEPHENS. Military gravesite rites were conducted by American Legion Ringgold Post No. 172.

The last twelve years we've traveled together
Through sunny and sometimes stormy weather.
You've been so gentle and so kind to me
When at that time, it was meant to be.
You were Heaven sent to care for me -
No one, but you ever said to me
I'm so proud to be seen with you.
The love look in your eyes
Tells me how much you idolize.
And the words you've said to me were very wise.
I'll remember you always with your loving ways.
How happy we've been -
What seems like such short days
Ago, so prepare a place for me, up there
When I, too, will be climbing those Golden Stairs.
