OBITUARY - DOROTHY HAZEL (SWANK) LEE

Dorothy Hazel LEE, 91, of Waterloo, formerly of Creston, died Dec. 14, 2004, at Country View Care Center in Waterloo.

Services will be 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Ave. The Rev. Clark FINEHOUT will officiate the service. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery at Creston. Visitation will be noon to 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Country View Care Center in Waterloo.

Mrs. LEE, daughter of Ferne (LAIRD) and Walter SWANK, was born Sept. 9, 1913, in Ringgold County. She lived on a farm and attended rural schools. In 1919, she graduated from Shannon City High School, then, with her older sister Doris, attended an extension of Iowa State Teachers College in preparation for teaching in rural schools. After completing the course, she still was too young to teach school so she worked at the Union County Home near Creston until she married Floyd G. LEE, June 2, 1936, in Atlantic. They moved to a farm near Clearfield and later lived on farms in the Shannon City and Afton areas before buying a farm between Afton and Lorimor. She was a homemaker and worked in area nursing homes. After selling their farm, they became the steward and matron of the Union County Home for five years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Creston.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances BIRD of Creston and Linda FITCH of Cedar Falls; son George (wife Pilar) LEE of Alamogordo, N.M.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister Eva (husband Charlie) LINDGREN of Lakewood, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1989; two sons-in-law, Jerry BIRD and Bruce FITCH; two brothers, Earl and Byrle SWANK; and two sisters, Helen WEEDA and Doris ADOLPHSEN.
