Memorial Service
[Rev. Frank S. Locke]

The United Evangelical Congregation of Ringgold City, observed a memorial service on last Sunday morning in rembrance of Rev. Dr. F. S. Lock, a former pastor of the church as as one who served the infant churches as a general missionary. He worked about fifteen years in the county and did a great work in establishing and confirming the churchs. He left Ringgold in 1888 and did a great work in the Oregon conference. Dr. Locke was born at Bellas Falls, Vermont, December 13, 1837 and died February 6, 1909 at Reedville, Oregon, aged 71 years, one month and 23 days. He went first to Minnesota and Wisconsin. He was married to Miss Mary Wilds. They had two sons and one daughter. Mrs. Locke died in 1876. In 1878 he was married to Miss Mary Bear, of Mt. Ayr, Iowa, who survives him. His son Howard, known to some of our people, still lives. Dr. Locke entered the Union army from Illinois and served with credit to himself and country. He practiced medicine twenty-five years before he entered the ministry. On recognition of his ability and adaptation to the gospel ministry he was licensed to preach in 1882 [?--date hard to read on microfilm]. He served the churches of Ringold City, Salem, Lee, Ellston and classes at Delphos and various places over the country. He was especially gifted in Sunday school work. He was sought in times of sorrow and distress to comfort the afflicted. he gained for himself in his western home the same respect in which he was held in Ringgold county. The uniform testimony of all was that "he was a good man full of the Holty Spirit and faith." On the memorial day a brief of his life and letters of respect were read and addresses of appreciation were made. many felt that he had been to them a spiritual father indeed. They all realized the worth of a good man.
