Deaths

DeVORE, Leora, 82, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, died Monday, September 7, 2009 at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa.

OBITUARY - LEORA DeVORE

Leora DeVORE, 82, of Oskaloosa died Monday September 7 [2009], at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born January 25, 1927, at Kellerton, Iowa, the daughter of Askel M. (Axel) and Viva Mae Alien JENSEN. She was raised around Kellerton, Iowa and later moved to Decatur with the family.

She graduated from high school at Leon, Iowa. Following her graduation she taught country school for a short time. On November 9, 1946, she was united in marriage to Raymond E. DeVORE at Osceola. Following their marriage Leora stayed home to care for her family. In 1961 the family moved to Oskaloosa and she worked at a nursing home in University Park, she later worked as a dietician at the Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa. In 1976 they moved to Des Moines and lived there until returning to Oskaloosa in 2008.

Leora was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church while in Des Moines. Leora also helped new colostomy patients learn how to deal with life with a colostomy. She also visted widows and counseled them through the grieving process. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery; and especially enjoyed sharing her handiwork with her children and grandchildren. In later years she enjoyed watching television and doing word searches.

Leora's family includes her husband of over 62 years, Raymond DeVORE of Oskaloosa; two daughters: Shirley (Alven) MEPPELINK and Nancy WOODS, all of Oskaloosa; tow sons and their wives, Larry and Judy DeVORE and Darrell and Sandy DeVORE, all of Oskaloosa; six grandchildren: Bob (Deb) DeVORE, David MEPPELINK, Ricky (Stephanie) DeVORE, Jennifer (Scott) BONNETT, Brenda (Matt) COFFIN, Jeremy (Kara) WOODS; seven great-granchildren; three brothers and their wives: Dennis and Margaret JENSEN of Des Moines, Bill and Evelyn JENSEN of Leon, and Johnny and Doris JENSEN of Atlantic; a sister and her husband, Mary Lou and Joel FREEMAN of Grundy Center; a sister-in-law, Doris JENSEN in Oregon; several nieces and nephews; and her furry companion, Kayely Rae.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dean JENSEN.
