OBITUARY - VERA MAY BLADES

Vera May BLADES, age 91, was born on May 4, 1917 at her home near Grand River, Iowa. She passed away on March 12, 2009 surrounded by her children. She was the fourth of the five children born to Henry and Bessie JIMMERSON.

Vera received her education in country schools near Grand River and later attended the school in Grand River while staying with her aunt Anna EVANS. She graduated from Grand River High School in 1936.

On November 15, 1945 Vera was united in marriage to Harold Roger BLADES and four children were born to this union; David Eugene, Dean Roger, Duane Allen, and Connie Sue.

Vera lived in Decatur and Ringgold County for the majority of her life, except for a brief move to the Grand River area. Vera has resided in or near Mount Ayr since 1966. She always worked hard, along with Harold, on the farm and later helped with bookkeeping when Harold owned and operated the gas station.

Gardening and raising flowers was a passion for Vera. She took pride in raising a huge, weed-free garden and tending a variety of flowers. The neighbors enjoyed this activity with Vera and they shared many gardening secrets. At one time, she had over 200 violet plants which she had propagated from violets given to her. When it was too cold to garden, Vera enjoyed making rag rugs and crocheting hot pads.

Vera was strong, dedicated Christian and enjoyed being a member of the First Baptist Church and later the United Baptist Presbyterian Church. She participated in church groups such as TEK and Lois Circle.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents, Henry & Bessie JIMMERSON; her husband Harold Roger BLADES on May 30, 2000; siblings Elbert JIMMERSON, Juanita OVERHOLTZER & her husband Lowell “Red”, Lloyd JIMMERSON, and Robert JIMMERSON.

Left to cherish her memory are her four children David & wife Shirley, Dean, Duane, and Connie and friend Kathryn NELSON; two grandchildren Joshua & wife Angela and Justin & fiancé Jennie; seven great grandchildren Austin, Madison, Allison, Ira, Baylen, Jadi, and Natalie; sisters-in-law Beulah JIMMERSON, Freda HIXSON, and Halcyon JIMMERSON; many relatives, neighbors, and friends.

Memorials are to the United Baptist Presbyterian Church.
