The Ringgold Record, 1895

DEATH of CHARLES STITES.

Charles STITES, son of the late F. M. STITES living in Poe township, died on last Friday, July 19, 1895, at the old family home.

Mr. STITES was born in Muscatine county September 17, 1861, and had passed the thirty-third year of his age. When still a youth the family moved to Pawesheik (sic) county. In 1876 he moved with the family to Ringgold. After passing his majority Charles STITES went to Nebraska, took a claim and made a start in life. He was industrious, frugal and careful, but met with misfortunes incident to the country, and eventually returned to Ringgold county where he has remained. Some years ago he was thrown quite violently from a load of hay and seriously hurt. He did not recover soon and in all probability this fall began the trouble which ended his life. He has been in the state of decline for many years and has submitted to the inevitable with remarkable courage and patience. He was noted for his gentle qualities and quiet demeanor of manner. Those knowing him highly respected him. He made no public religious profession and yet, in all respects, he was a most excellent example.

The funeral took place from the home in Poe on Saturday, July 20th and was conducted by pastor E. B. CROSS.

NOTE: Charles' father Freeman M. STITES was born in 1874, and died in 1906 with interment at Diagonal Cemetery, Diagonal, Ringgold County, Iowa. Also interred at Diagonal Cemetery is Burr STITES, born 1905 and died 1906. Charles' sister Alice STITES a few weeks after Charles.
