A TRAGIC DEATH!

Dr. E. STILES Passes Through the Valley of Shadow, and Over the Dark River

On last Thursday evening while heroically battling the fire in his hotel at this place, Dr. E. STILES inhaled the smoke and gas, and was severely burned about the face and hands, the latter so severely that the flesh partly dropped therefrom. Too much morphine, and severe burns, caused death at 4 o'clock on Friday morning. Soon after the last building had fallen in the big east side fire, Drs. BAILEY, HORNE, MERRILL and GLEASON were all summoned to his bedside to rally him from the over effects of the morphine. All that medical skill could do, was done, but to no avail.

Dr. Elijah STILES was born in Fayette county, Ind., Dec. 8, 1834: came to Mt. Ayr in August, 1884 and entered on the practice of dentistry, which profession he had followed ever since, and, after his marriage with Mrs. Elizabeth ALLOWAY, on Jan. 14, 1886, he assumed the additional duties of landlord and the hotel was called after him, the STILES House. His aged mother, and brother from Patterson, Iowa, arrived on Saturday morning to pay the last tribute to the loved one. The funeral servces were conducted by Rev. W. B. THOMPSON at the M. E. church on Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, and the remains were then laid away in the south [Rose Hill] cemetery. Surely no one knows the day nor hour when death shall come. May all be prepared for the solemn change, and peacefully rest when life's warfare is over.
