OBITUARY - THOMAS STAMPER.

Thomas STAMPER, a respected citizen of Grant township, died Thursday, January, 4, 1894, aged 61 years, three months and 4 days (sic). Mr. STAMPER was a native of England and born September 20, 1832 [Yorkshire, England]. On coming to the United States Mr. STAMPER first located in the state of Michigan where he lived only two years. He then removed to Kendall county, Illinois, where he made his home for thirty-five years. On leaving Illinois he came to Ringgold county, Iowa, and settled on a farm where he has since resided. He had made a splendid farm containing 1000 acres, in all probability, with a commodious residence and convenient barns and outbuildings. He took great interest in the raising and improvement of stock and was thus an enterprising benefactor. Mr. STAMPER married [April 9, 1858, Kendall IL] Miss Anna TURBEY, also a native of England. They had born to them seven children, six sons and one daughter. He was a man of modest bearing and of general intelligence. He was a dignified gentlemen (sic) of the old school and always polite and courteous and had great respect for the comfort and feelings of others. He was fair and prompt in all his dealings and noted as one of Ringgold's substantial citizens. The community and county suffers a great loss in his death. He had done much for the improvement of the county.

The funeral took place on Sunday, January 7th 1894 and the remains were laid to rest in the Clearfield cemetery.

NOTE: Thomas' wife Mary "Anna" (TURBEY) was born in England in 1840, and died at the age of 70 years, 6 months and 20 days on April 26, 1911. Thomas and Anna were interred at Clearfield Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa.
