The Mount Ayr Record-News, 1933

RESPECTED CITIZEN DIES AT AGE OF EIGHTY-SEVEN

After an illness of several months' duration, J[ohn]. E[dward]. SCOTT died at his home in west Mount Ayr yesterday (Wednesday, May 3, 1933) morning at 5 o'clock. He was 87 years of age. The end, which came peacefully, was not unexpected. Mr. Scott had been in feeble health for several years and his last illness covered a period of several months. Two weeks ago he returned home from Dupree, S.D., where he had been cared for in the home of his son, Wilbur H. SCOTT, since the death of Mrs. [Clementina Rachel (PIERSON)] SCOTT in September, 1932. He is survived by his two sons, Walter K. SCOTT of Mount Ayr, who was at the bedside when the end came, Wilbur H. SCOTT of Dupree, S.D., and one daughter, Mrs. Sue CLARK, of Fayetteville, Ark.

Mr. SCOTT was one of the best known citizens of Ringgold county and during his long residence in the county, which covered a period of fifty-eight years, commanded the respect and confidence of all who knew him. He was born in Noble county, Ohio [August, 1848], and moved with his parents to Guthrie county, Iowa, in the year 1866; later moved to Kansas, where he resided for a short time. He was reared on the farm and received his elementary education in the rural schools. At the age of nineteen he began teaching school, which he continued for several years and then entered the State University of Iowa. In 1870 he went to Riley county, Kansas, where he taught for three years; thence to Macon county, Missouri, and in the fall of 1875 returned to Iowa City and entered the law school of the State University from which he was graduated in 1876. Soon after his graduation he located in Mount Ayr. He practiced law and engaged in the real estate, loan and abstract business in connection with his practice. For many years he was engaged in banking, being president of the Iowa State Bank, and when that institution was consolidated with the Mount Ayr State Bank became a stockholder in the Mount Ayr bank. He also served as president of the Ringgold County Abstract Company. During his long residence in Mount Ayr Mr. SCOTT, though modest and retiring in disposition, was called upon to serve in positions of responsibility. From 1883 until 1891, with the exception of one year, he served as mayor of Mount Ayr and for many years served as a member of the Mount Ayr school board.

Funeral ararngements had not been completed at the hour the Record-News went to press.

NOTE: Clementina Rachel PIERSON, wife of John Edward SCOTT, was born in Marietta, Ohio, the daughter of Chambers Karr and Martha Christy PIERSON, and died September 12, 1932. John Edward SCOTT was interred beside his wife Clementina at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa.
