ANOTHER OLD SOLDIER ANSWERS LAST ROLL CALL

John A. SCOTT, veteran of the civil war and a resident of Ringgold county for fifty-six years, died at his home in Beaconsfield Sunday afternoon. He had been in declining health for several years, due to the infirmities of old age, and his critical illness covered a period of several weeks' duration. Mr. SCOTT was one of the best known men in Ringgold county. His long residence in the county, and his many years of service as a member of the soldiers' relief commission, from which position he resigned a few years ago on account of his advanced age, and his participation in public affairs, brought him a wide acquaintanceship throughout the county and his courteous manner and kindly disposition popularized him with his associates. In the death of John A. SCOTT Ringgold county loses one of her best citizens.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the home, being conducted by Rev. E. S. MENOHER, pastor of the Mount Ayr Methodist church, assisted by Rev. DOYLE, pastor of the Grand River- Beaconsfield charge. The service was largely attended, neighbors and friends, comrades of the G.A.R., members of the American Legion and members of the auxiliaries being present to pay tribute of respect to one whose life was an example of faithfulness to the highest ideals of citizenship. The firing squad of the Ringgold Post of the American Legion participated in the services bot at the home and at the grave in Kellerton [Maple Row] cemetery where the body was laid to rest.

John Albert SCOTT was born in Clinton county, Ohio, October 2, 1848, and died at his home in Beaconsfield, Iowa, July 6, 1930, at the age of 81 years, nine months and four days. He was the youngest child of Capt. Thos. E. and Elnora (MOORE) SCOTT, deceased, and the last of a family of six children, four sisters and one brother.

At the age of two years he moved with his parents to Buckcreek, Indiana. At the age of 18 years he enlisted in the Co. A, 116 Indiana. Being too young for service, he enlisted as a musician. Later he was transferred in active service where he served until the close of the war, receiving an honorable discharge.

In 1874 the family came west and located at Kellerton, Iowa.

December 1, 1880, he was united in marriage to Marietta SLOAN at Millersburg, Ill., and to this union were born four children - Elnora Moore PURVIANCE of Pleasanton, Kan.; Eldora Miller NICHOLS of Hinckley, Minn.; Kenneth Burl SCOTT of Beaconsfield, Iowa; and Ruth Elena DAVIS of Red Oak, Iowa.

They spent the greater part of their married life on a farm near Beaconsfield, Iowa, until about 20 years ago they retired from the farm on account of his failing health to Beaconsleld (sic).

He was a member of the M. E. church and the G.A.R. post at Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Besides his family he leaves seven grandchildren, five nephews and one niece to mourn his death.

NOTE: Marietta (SLOAN), wife of John A. SCOTT was born in 1857 and died in 1946 with interment beside her husband at Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton, Ringgold County, Iowa.
