CIVIL WAR VETERAN ANSWERS LAST CALL

E. S. MORSE, Resident of county 59 Years
Passes Peacefully to His Reward.

With reverence born of respect for a worthy life, citizens of Mount Ayr community bowed in solumn reverence Thursday when announcement was made that E. S. MORSE, aged 93 and a resident of Ringgold county for 59 years, had passed away at his home in northwest Mount Ayr. Mr. MORSE was probably the oldest person in Ringgold county and for many months the infirmities of age had kept him at his home. The end came peacefully.

During the active years of his life Mr. MORSE was engaged in farming. For the past twenty-six years with his wife and adopted daughter he had lived in pleasant retirement in his Mount Ayr home.

Funeral services, held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist church, were largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. L. W. THORNBURG, pastor of the United Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. T. S. RHOADES. Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery [Mount Ayr].

The following obituary ws read at the funeral:

Edwin Sylvester MORSE, eldest son of Daniel and Lucy MORSE, was born in Huron county, Ohio, March 4, 1834, and departed this life July 21, 1927, at the age of 93 years, four months and 27 days. He was the last surviving member of a family of nine children.

He answered his country's call by enlisting October 1, 1861, in Company H, 55th Ohio Infantry. He was wounded May 2, 1863, at the battle of Chancellorsville, and was honorably discharged July 19, 1865.

While he was in the army he took his first degree in Masonry and has been a member of the Masonic order all these years.

Following the close of the war he became identified with the Grand Army of the Republic and for years has been a member of the local post at Mount Ayr.

On October 3, 1866, he was united in marriage to Ann NEWTON. To this union no children were born, but two were adopted, B. F. MORSE of Poe township and Sarah Lavina at home, who with his devoted wife survive. He also leaves five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. MORSE left Ohio in a prairie schooner February 3, 1868, and arrived at Mount Ayr March 5, 1868, first settling in Caledonia, where they resided for seven years. From Caledonia he moved to a farm in Poe township which he had improved.

In 1901 he retired from active farm life and moved to his home in north Mount Ayr where he resided till the day of his death.

A number of years ago he was converted an united with the Methodist church and has been a true and faithful member unto the end.
