DEATH Claims A Good CITIZEN

Geo. D. MOFFATT, Life-long Resident of County, Dies Following Operation.

Geo. D. MOFFATT, life-long resident of Ringgold county and one of the county's best known and most highly respected citizens, died Saturday, November 29, at the St. Mary's hospital in Rochester, Minn., where on November 21 he submitted to a critical surgical operation. Mr. MOFFATT had been in declining health for several months, but his condition did not become alarming until a few days before he went to the hospital. Examination at the hospital revealed a condition which required immediate operation and relatives were summoned to the bedside. The patient rallied from the operation, but on account of his weakened condition, due to long illness, little hope was entertained for his recovery. Reports from the hospital both before and after the operation were such as to cause grave apprehension. Life held by a tender thread until Saturday when the spirit took its flight.

Announcement of the death of Mr. MOFFATT brought profound sorrow to the community, and the large attendance at the funeral, which was held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Baptist church in Mount Ayr, attested the high regard in which he was held. The funeral was conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. J. HAMILTON, assisted by Rev. VERTS, moderator of the Creston Baptist association and pastor of the First Baptist church in Corning, and Rev. Frank ANDERSON, executive secretary of the Iowa Baptist convention, of Des Moines. Burial was in the Ringgold cemetery.

The following brief obituary was read at the service:

"George Duncan MOFFATT, the son of Peter and Eliza MOFFATT, was born in Ringgold county, Iowa, October 1, 1862. At the age of sixteen he was converted and baptized into the fellowship of the Baptist church. On July 4, 1883, he was united in marriage with Miss Lennie SULLIVAN. To this union were born six children. He passed away in Rochester, Minn., at St. Mary's hospital, Saturday, November 29. Three children preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his death one brother, one sister, twelve grandchildren, two sons, one daughter and a loving companion, besides many other relatives and friends."

In the death of Mr. MOFFATT Ringgold county loses one of her best citizens; one the influence of whose life was ever given to the promotion of righteousness; a true christian gentleman at whose passing the community suffers an irreparable loss. Most of his life was devoted to farming and stock raising, in which occupation he was successful. Upon his retirement from the farm several years ago he moved to Mount Ayr, where he resided until his death. He was a devoted member of the Baptist church and active in the work of the church. At his death the community mourns.

NOTE: Lennie A. (SULLIVAN), wife of George Duncan MOFFATT, was born in 1863, and died in 1935 with interment at Ringgold Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa.
