OBITUARY - TERRY LYNN HOWIE

Terry Lynn HOWIE was born on May 20th, 1952 in Mount Ayr, Iowa. He attended elementary schools in Cromwell, Delphos and Redding Iowa. In 8th grade, Terry came to Mount Ayr for school and then graduated with the class of 1970. Following graduation, he went to college at Southwestern Community College in Creston. After meeting his high school sweetheart in 8th grade, Fay FELL and Terry married in 1974. They raised three beautiful children, Alicia Fay, Nathan Joshua and Nolan Patrick. Terry worked two jobs, one at Evans Brothers clothing store and one at the Elks Club at Creston. He then moved to Mount Ayr and worked for Irving’s Clothing Store until 1977. Then he decided to take up carpentry working with Jack GARRITY, Bud and Dennis BRECKENRIDGE, Tim SAVILLE, Kelly RICHARDS, John ALLEN and Danny LUTRICK. He admired and greatly respected Dean FROST who served as his mentor and role model. In 1995, Terry took a job as a technician for the County Engineer's Office. When his day there was done, he continued to take on various and numerous “side jobs”. He made sure his children learned both his discipline and his masterful skill of carpentry.

Terry’s love for competitive sports started at a very young age. He and brother Lanny HOWIE worked on perfecting his baseball pitching while their father Virgil coached the team. During high school Terry played football, basketball and ran track. He even still ranks in the top ten for the 800 meter. He made sure his three children and lately his grandchildren enjoyed competing and constantly worked with them, teaching them to pitch, catch, shoot the basketball and swing a golf club. When his children began to be involved in sports he decided to take up golf so he could continue to compete with them and then it turned into a true love for him. Terry always made it a point to be present at most of the children’s or grandchildren’s games or meets even with his busy work schedule. He took great pride in his abilities to get his jobs completed and done right. In a way his restless and boundless energy was perhaps because God knew Terry would not be with us for long enough. Relationships with other people were also very important to him. Terry was always honest and direct with others and he expected no less from them in return. Throughout Terry’s life he connected with and formed strong friendships with multitudes of people, those he loved as family, those he worked with and for and those he relaxed and played with. While his faith in God was private, his belief in eternal life was unshakeable. Terry leaves us with a terrible void in our lives but it is so much easier to move on knowing he is with the Lord and all of those that have passed on before him. We will always have the wonderful memories of the times we’ve all shared with him. Terry was a very special person with the gift of life and he truly lived every minute of every day and he would not have wanted to live life any other way!

Terry passed away suddenly on July 20, 2008. He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil, on January 16, 2008.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Fay of Mount Ayr; children Alicia STILL & husband Mike of Mount Ayr, Nathan of Des Moines, and Nolan & fiancé Terra of Kansas City, MO; two precious grandchildren Teya & Carter STILL; his mother Jean HOWIE of Mt Ayr, his brother Lanny HOWIE of Oelwein, IA and his sister Kelly SCHLAGER & husband Myron of Evans, CO; father & mother-in-law Roy & Fran FELL of Mount Ayr; brothers-in-law Paul FELL & wife Stephany of Pleasant Hill, IA, John FELL & wife Sohila of Des Moines, Eric FELL of Mount Ayr, and Jim FELL & wife Rachael of Lees Summit, MO; sister-in-law Mary ROBERTSON & husband Mike of Omaha, NE; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and many, many friends.
