OBITUARY - MARJORIE EILEEN MILLER

Marjorie “Eileen” (JACKSON) MILLER, eldest daughter of Mervyn G. JACKSON and Katheryn (WEBB) JACKSON, was born on April 7, 1921, near Kellerton, Iowa, and died March 25, 2003, in Springfield, Missouri.
Eileen lived most of her life in Ringgold and Decatur counties, Iowa. She attended grade school at the Jackson Hill rural school northwest of Kellerton, graduated from Kellerton High School in 1937, and attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. She taught school at the Foland country school northeast of Grand River, Iowa, from 1942 to 1946. [While teaching at the Foland school, Eileen boarded with Homer Lowell and Pearle Veva (BRAMON) FOLAND.]

Eileen was baptized accepting Christ as her Savior in 1944, into the Christian Church-Disciples of Christ, in Kellerton. On June 10, 1945, Eileen married Walter James MILLER of Grand River and into this union four children were born: Kathryn Mae, Carol Ann, James Walter, and Ronald Rex.

Eileen took no task or chore as menial, giving exacting care and attention to everything from rearing her children, to maintaining her home or helping out on the farm on which they lived. She prided herself in cooking and baking for family and friends, embroidering, raising large gardens, canning and freezing large stock holds of fruits and vegetables, making butter, jams and jellies and sewing clothes. She delighted in making everyone’s children feel individual and special and cherished her pets.

Beside her home activities, Eileen was always willing to help out in school activities for her children. She also was a longtime member of the 4-G Club of Grand River until it disbanded in the 1980s.

In 1971, Eileen and Walter sold their farm northeast of Grand River and moved into a home on the edge of Kellerton. During this time, she managed to maintain a large garden, helped with the Christian Church’s Ladies Auxiliary, and served part-time as a cook for the high school. In 1976, Eileen went to work in the housekeeping department at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, being responsible for maintaining the Closson Center, again, giving her uncompromising attention to all she was asked to do. She retired from Graceland in 1984.

In January 1998, she moved to Springfield, Missouri to be near her daughter, Katheryn, due to her failing health. While she lived there, she became a member of the Hopedale Baptist Church in Ozark, Missouri. Eventually, she moved into the Ravenswood Residential Care Center where she enjoyed many friends and activities until just prior to her death.

Preceding her in death were her parents, and brothers: Washington Jay, Gilbert Jr., Oran Stanley, and Leland Rex.

Eileen is survived by her husband, Walter of Kellerton; her children: Katheryn and husband Dennis SCOVILLE of Ozark, Missouri; Carol and husband Earl ANDREAS of West Des Moines, Iowa; James of Westwood, Kansas; and Rex of Kellerton; two grandchildren, Paul SCOVILLE of Columbia, Missouri and Sheri SCOVILLE of Grandview, Missouri; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Laura SCOVILLE of Columbia, Missouri; and a sister, Grace Arlene FOSTER of Kellerton. She also leaves behind three step-grandchildren, and five step-grandchildren, all of the Des Moines area; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Services were held at the Christian Church in Kellerton on Saturday, March 29, 2003, at 10:30 a.m., Rev. Michael JACKSON officiating. Pianist Cathy BRAUSE accompanied vocalist Maurice JONES in the musical selections, Back of the Clouds and How Great Thou Art. Interment was made at the Munyon Cemetery at Grand River. Arrangements were under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Ozark, Missouri.
