JOHN A. McNERNEY DIES SUDDENLY

Fails to Rally From Heart Attack Suffered Early Yesterday Morning.

The cloud of deep sorrow has rested over the community since yesterday morning when it became known that John A. McNERNEY, member of the firm of MaGRATH & McNERNEY, proprietors of the Snow White Bakery, had died from a heart attack. Mr. McNERNEY was apparently in his usual health Tuesday, was at his place of business all day and was in his usual happy frame of mind. In the evening he complained of a slight pain in his chest, but exhibited no other evidence of illness. He planned the work at the bakery and went to his home, retiring at the usual hour. About three o'clock a. m. he was awakened by a sharp pain in his hcest, a physician was summoned and it was at once realized that his condition was alarming, and two hours later, at about five a. m. the spirit took its flight.

Mr. McNERNEY had been a resident of Mount Ayr for about thirty years, coming to this city from Des Moines, where he grew to manhood. He was 56 years of age and is survived by his wife, one daughter, Miss Marjorie McNERNEY and two sons, John and Howard. Mr. McNERNEY was a public-spirited citizen, always interested in the community welfare and was popular with his associates. During his residence in this city he was engaged in the restaurant and bakery business, in recent years being one of the proprietors of the Snow White Bakery. He served the community in various capacities, as a member of the town councils for a number of years, as an officer in the Commercial club and during the WILSON administration served eight years a postmaster at Mount Ayr.

At the hour the Record-News went to press, arrangements for the funeral had not been made, pending receipt of word from the daughter who is on a trip to Colorado.

OBITUARY - JOHN A. McNERNEY

John A. McNERNEY, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel McNERNEY, was born in Omaha, Neb., May 17, 1870, and died at his home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, July 27, 1927, at the age of 57 years, two months and 17 days. When he was a child he moved with his parents to Des Moines, where he grew to manhood. He came to Mount Ayr in the year 1895 and in 1903 was married to Miss Minnie B. CAMPBELL. To this union three children were born, Marjorie, John and Howard, who with the wife and mother survive. Besides the immediate family he leaves two brothers, Daniel and Tim McNERNEY of Des Moines, and three sisters, Mrs. Nellie CARRIGAN and Mrs. H. C. SLACK of Des Moines, and Mrs. Wilbur S. HODGSON of Duluth, Minn.

When a young man Mr. McNERNEY learned the baker's trade in Des Moines and upon coming to Mount Ayr was employed for some time as a baker in one of the local bakeries; later engaging in business for himself and during all the years of his residence in this city has been identified with the business interests of the town. Except for the period from 1913 to 1921, when he served as postmaster, he was engaged in the baker business, being at the time of his death one of the proprietors of the Snow White Bakery. During the world war he served as food administrator for Ringgold county and rendered invaluable service. He was a progressive citizen, always interested in the welfare of the community.

Mr. McNERNEY was a worthy member of the Roman Catholic church all his life and at the time of his death held membership in the A. O. U. W. and Yeoman lodges.

Requiem high mass was celebrated at the Catholic church Friday morining at 10 o'clock by Rev. Maurice J. CULHANE and interment was in Rose Hill cemetery. The service in the church was largely attended, the church being far too small to admit the friends who came to pay tribute of respect to the departed and to share with the bereaved family their burden of grief.

NOTE: Minnie B. (CAMPBELL), wife of John A. McNERNEY, was born on February 10, 1880, and died on February 19, 1952, with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa.
