DEATH of J. HALL LIGGETT.

After a prolonged illness, J. Hall LIGGETT, one of the best known citizens of Ringgold county, passed away at his home in north Mount Ayr Wednesday afternoon, October (sic) 29. Mr. LIGGETT, who was engaged in business in Mount Ayr for nearly forty years, first being associated with his brother in the grocery business and later engaged in the insurance business, enjoyed a wide acquaintance throughout Ringgold county. He was a man of sterling honesty, happy and cheerful in disposition, possessed of an alert mind and a keen sense of humor which made him a favorite among his associates. The passing of Mr. LIGGETT removes from the community one of its oldest business men. For a time he served as secetary for the Ringgold County Mutual Fire Insurance association, giving up the work at few years ago on account of ill health, since which time he had gradually declined until the end came.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the United Presbyterian church, being conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. L. THORNBURG, and the body was laid to rest in Rose Hill cemetery.

John Halldane LIGGETT was born May 22, 1849, in Union county, Ohio. He died in Mount Ayr, Iowa, September 29, 1926, aged 77 years, four months and seven days.

While still a boy his parents moved to Livingston county, Illinois, where he grew to young manhood.

About the year 1870 he moved to Girard, Kansas, where he engaged in farming until 1890 when he returned to Mount Ayr and became associated with his brother, Thomas LIGGETT, in the grocery business for several years. Upon leaving the store he entered the business of insurance which he followed as long as he was able to do so.

While in Kansas he was united in marriage to Miss Alice A. COLE, who preceded him in death October 9, 1890. To this union were born three children - Josephine (Mrs. Walter RUSK), Pearl and Mary (Mrs. W. G. PETERS.) Josephine and Pearl both preceded their father in death.

In September, 1892, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary "Louise" CAMPBELL in Monmouth, Illinois, who survives him. Besides the widow and daughter, six grandchildren survive him.

NOTE: Alice A. (COLE), first wife was born in 1861, and died on October 9, 1890 with interment at Rose Hill Cemtery, Mount Ayr. Mary Ellen, daughter of John Halldane and ALice A. (COLE) LIGGETT, was born in 1872, and died in 1881. Pearl Forest, daughter of John Halldane and Alice A. (COLE) LIGGETT, was born in 1874, and died in 1882. Pearl and Mary were interred at Oak Ridge (a.k.a. Forrest Home) Cemetery near Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa.
