RITES TODAY

Irma C. Appleby, 82, the widow of Austin D. Appleby, died late Sunday afternoon (Jan. 6) in Detroit, Mich. She had been in failing health for several years, and she had lived since 1965 in Detroit to be near her daughter.

The daughter of Samuel F. and Loma Guiselman Bailey, she was born in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, on Aug. 4, 1891. Her family moved to Grinnell when she was young, and she attended the Grinnell schools, including Grinnell High School. She also attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

On Dec. 9, 1916, she was married to Austin D. Appleby in Montezuma. The couple had two children, George C. Appleby of Des Moines and Mrs. J.W. (Ruth) Pichette of Dearborn, Mich. Mr. and Mrs. Appleby had lived in Grinnell since their marriage, and Mr. Appleby worked as a car salesman until his death on Feb. 2, 1965. Mrs. Appleby was a member of the Methodist Church and was a past president of the Daughters of Union Veterans in Grinnell.

Survivors include her children, George and Ruth, and four grandchildren, Dean, Susan, Todd and Nancy Pichette, all of Dearborn. She was preceded in death by her husband and her brother, George Bailey.

Funeral services for Mrs. Appleby were held at 1:30 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John W. McCallum, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Kathleen Heffner, and pallbearers were Paul Herrold, Don Herrold, Brad Herrold, Foster Pugh, Jerry Phipps, and David Hamilton. Burial was in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Malcom.
