CATHERINE MCCALLUM

Catherine Eliza McCallum, 94, of Grinnell died Monday, Jan. 6, at Careage Nursing Home in Newton.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Daniel I. Ogata, pastor of the Malcom Presbyterian Church, officiating. Organist was Alice Renaud, and pallbearers were Charles, Terry, James, Larry, Michael and Michael Edwards Jr. Burial was in Silent City Cemetery, Monroe.

The daughter of James and Mollie Lotz Strafford, she was born Sept. 4, 1902, in Monroe. She moved with her family to Gross, Neb., and later Spencer, Neb., where she received her education.

She was married to Byard Edwards July 20, 1921, in Butte, Neb. The couple farmed in the Spencer and Napor, Neb., areas before moving to a farm near Ewart in 1928. They moved to Grinnell in 1941.

Her first marriage ended in divorce, and she was married to Jennings Bryan McCallum Dec. 23, 1944, in Newton. They lived in Grinnell where Mrs. McCallum was employed at the Grinnell Shoe Factory for 23 years. She later worked at several restaurants, including Wayne's Steak House, the Longhorn and Skel Diner. She was also a school crossing guard for several years.

She was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary, and she had volunteered at the Veterans Home in Knoxville for many years.

Surviving are her children, Marge White of Newton, Paul Edwards of Phoenix, Artiz., Violet Leadly of Buckeye, Ariz., and Herschel Edwards of Marshalltown; one sister, Ina Mitchell of Florida; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Elvera Galbraith; one son, Francis Edwards; and one grandson.

Memorials contributions in her name may be made to the Grinnell American Legion.
