GLADYS DOUGLAS

Gladys Vivian Douglas was born June 23, 1899, near Gary, S.D. She was the daughter of Frank and Jeanie Graham Kenyon. She grew up in the Brooklyn area attending local schools. She also attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, and taught in country schools for seven years.

On Feb. 24, 1928, she was married to Emmet Dean Douglas in Grinnell. To this marriage three children were born: Richard Lee Douglas, Sr. of Skiatook, Okla., Charlotte Jean Fleener, and Marvin "Dean" Douglas of Grinnell.

Mr. and Mrs. Douglas lived and farmed together near Hartwick for three years then moved north of Malcom where they continued to farm until 1986, when Emmett passed away. The last few years she had resided at Brookhaven Nursing Home.

She was a homemaker all her married life and was a member of the Madison Church of Christ in Poweshiek County. She enjoyed gardening and flowers and always had a cup of coffee and homemade cookies ready for friends and neighbors.

Surviving are her sons; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Keller and Mrs. Anna Seehorn; and a brother, Graeme Kenyon.

Services were held March 13 at Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell.

The Rev. Dennis Smith, Madison Church of Christ of rural Brooklyn performed the services.

Music was provided by organist Jan Read playing "Beyond The Sunset," In The Garden," "Ivory Palaces," and "Will The Circle Be Unbroken."

Pallbearers were Glenn Bearbower, Bert Goodrich, Charles Goodrich, Jr., Dale Goodrich, Joe Goodrich and Peter Goodrich. Honorary bearers were George Baustian, Charles Goodrich, Sr., Duncan McDonald, Ernest Swanson and Richard Swanson.

Interment followed services at Ivy Hill Cemetery, Malcom.
