ORVILLE GLEN SPAIN, 82

Orville Glen Spain, 82, of Montezuma, died September 18, 1997 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell.

He was born December 27, 1914 southwest of Barnes City, the son of Clyde and Lora (McMains) Spain. He graduated from Barnes City High School in 1932. He worked as a farm hand and on December 27, 1935, he was united in marriage to Lucille Lambirth at Unionville, Mo. In about 1940, they began to farm in the Barnes City and Montezuma area.

He managed Co-op elevators in Barnes City and Farragut. He also managed the Fullerton Lumber Yard in Montezuma for several years. He served for 14 years as a deputy assessor and then as Poweshiek County Assessor, retiring in 1982.

Mr. and Mrs. Spain spent several winters in Texas and Arizona.

He had been a longtime Mason and a Knights of Pythias member. He had also been a member of the Iowa State Association of Assessors. He was a member of the Montezuma Lions club and he served on the school board at both Barnes City and North Mahaska at New Sharon.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth; his wife, Lucille on May 29, 1997; his parents and one brother, Raymond Spain.

He is survived by his family, Darlene and Chuck Hess of Layton, Utah and Darrell and Sherri Spain of Montezuma; five grandchildren, Lance Pooler, Derek Pooler, Kristine Post, Jeff Spain and Jim Spain; five great-grandchildren, one sister, Luella Luther of Coralville and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were September 24 with Watts Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Barnes City Cemetery.
