Des Moines, Iowa, April 11, 1899
Morgan THOMAS, state mine inspector died at his room here at 10:00 o'clock this afternoon of a complication of diseases. He was for years superintendent of gold and silver mines in the west, and lived at Muchachinock for a long term of years Although an ardent Republican he was appointed mine inspector by Gov. BOLES, because of his qualifications.

Mr. THOMAS was well and favorably known to a large circle of friends here, having been employed in the mines near this city, He was a bachelor and made his home with his brother Evan THOMAS of Muchachinock. He always voted in this county and was proud to call this his home. He was a trusted employee of the Consolidated Coal Company for a long time and was a favorite with all who knew him. He was well posted on mining affairs and his judgment on such matters was always good. The remains will be brought here for interment but the arrangements have not yet been completed.

The funeral of the late Morgan THOMAS who died in Des Moines was held in this city Thursday morning from Congregational Church. The remains arrived from Des Moines at 9:45 over the RI and were in escort of honors from the Des Moines Elks of which lodge the deceased was a member. The party was met by the Knights Templar of this city who took charge of the remains and the funeral was conducted under Masonic auspices. The Oskaloosa Lodge of the Elks also met the Des Moines Party and attended the funeral in a body. The K of P band was at the head of the procession and was formed at the station and it led the way to the Congregational Church. The funeral quite largely attended and the sermon preached by Rev. R.W. HUGHES of Beacon. The procession to the burial place in Forest Cemetery was formed about 11o'clock and the same order was observed that prevailed in the march from the station at the grave services according to Masonic ritual were observed.

The pallbearers were from the Des Moines Lodge of the Elks and were as follows:

Died--In Des Moines, April 11, at 10 a.m. Morgan THOMAS, State mine inspector
Mr. THOMAS had been ill for several months. He lived at the home of Mrs. John Williams at East 5th & Walnut streets where he had been under the care of a trained nurse since January. He had been trouble with asthma and bronchitisand bronchial affections since an extreme attack of pneumonia in Leadville, Colorado several years ago and where practically destroyed one of his lungs. This trouble was aggravated with a severe affection of the liver andkidneys.

A brother, Evan THOMAS, a nephew and niece, children of his sister who lives in Wales, all of whom live near Oskaloosa were immediately notified of the death and a brother who lives in Colorado was also telegraphed. A brief funeral service here at 5 o'clock on Wed evening has been planned.

I am looking for information on my Great Uncle Morgan G. Thomas who was a state mine inspector in the 1890's.
