Susie Sanford, 52, was with her family when she passed away shortly after midnight on October 19, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center.
Susie was born on June 22, 1959 to Virginia and Phillip Keating of Sioux City, Iowa. She married Steven Sanford of Sioux City, Iowa on August 30, 1980 and they moved to Des Moines shortly thereafter where they started their family: Amanda, Eric, Natalie and Brian.
Susie always pursued her passion for knowledge and caring for others. She studied nursing in many capacities, earning her Masters in Nursing from the University of Iowa and Mercy Medical College. Susie's deepest passion was caring for others, especially young children. She worked for Mercy Medical Center as a nurse in many units, spending most of her working years with children and their families. Susie was strongly dedicated to family, child healthcare and her volunteer work in pain management for the American Pain Foundation.
A memorial service will be held at Caldwell Raddatz funeral home on Friday, October 21, at 10 a.m. The family asks that in lieu of any contributions or flowers that donations be made to the American Pain Foundation in her name. There will be a memorial luncheon at the American Legion Hall at 68th and Douglas after the service.
Susie was preceded in death by her father, Phillip Keating. She is survived by her mother Virginia Keating; her brother, Phillip Keating Jr.; her sister, Kathy Boden; her husband, Steve Sanford and her four children, Amanda, Eric, Natalie and Brian.
Everyone who knew Susie will remember her for her devotion to helping others, reaching out with her loving heart to help ease the pain of everyone she knew. We are blessed to have had her in our lives and she will be greatly missed.
