Dr. David L. McCoy, 77, passed away peacefully at home on August 18, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of David’s life will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church 10 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2011, with burial to follow at Resthaven Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., with a vigil at 7:30 p.m., on Sunday, August 21, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.

He was born on September 26, 1933, in Los Angeles, California, to Bernard and Bernice McCoy. He attended Loras College and graduated from the University of Iowa School of Dentistry in 1957. He was stationed two years Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. David practiced dentistry on the south side of Des Moines for 40 years.

Marrying his high school sweetheart, Janie Butler in 1955, David and Janie enjoyed a wonderful life together for 56 years. Their marriage was blessed with five daughters, Kathy Mountain (Bruce), Chris Graziano (Chuck), Betsy Vacco (Rory), Carrie McCoy and Margaret Ulin (Ben).

David is also remembered by his eight grandchildren, David, Adam, Emily, Alyssa, Andrea, Anthony, Bennie and Dymond.

An active member of Christ The King Catholic Church, David served as Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and member of the Men’s Choir. He was a past president of the Embassy Club; a member of the Chaine des Rotisseurs, Knights of Columbus and a past chairman of the board at Brenton Bank.

Dave was an avid tennis player winning several local tournaments over the years but most of all enjoyed the camaraderie with his tennis guys. At his southern Iowa hunt club, Doc loved to fish on the “Goose” with Janie, and fix great steak dinners for his deer and turkey hunting companions.

David is survived by his brothers Bill, Jim and Robert, twelve nieces and thirteen nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother John, his sister Mary and her husband Dick Curoe and two nephews.

Special thanks to Hospice of Central Iowa for their compassionate care during David’s final days. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to be decided at a later date.
