MRS. WILLIAM KALAS WAS PIONEER SETTLER IN THE PERRY CREEK VALLEY

Death claimed Mrs. William Kalas, a lifelong resident of Iowa, at her home, Saturday night, following an illness of one week. Death was due to declining powers of age. She was 79 years of age.

Mrs. Kalas was born and lived all her life in Iowa. She was born at Guttenberg, Iowa, June 10, 1849, and grew to womanhood in that community. Her maiden name was Mary Erhardt and her parents were among the first settlers in Eastern Iowa. She was united in marriage with William Kalas and in the seventies they came to Plymouth county and took up land in Liberty township. Mr. and Mrs. Kalas left the farm about twenty-three years ago and came to LeMars to live. Mr. Kalas departed this life May 3, 1916.

She is survived by seven children, Rev. W. H. Kalas, of Bigstone City, S. D.; Mrs. Emma Kaelke of LeMars; Mrs. Ella Wetzel of Hammond, Minn.; John Kalas Sioux City; Will Kalas Glendale, Arizona; Otto Kalas Irwin, Iowa, and Mrs. Sam Zimmerman of Le Mars.

Three children (actually five) preceded her in death.

There are thrifty-four grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at St. Paul’s Methodist church, Rev. B. F. Zuehl officiating.

Mrs. Kalas was one of the pioneer women who helped build up the community and was highly respected by all who knew her.
