HOLD RITES FOR SHIRLEY JOHNSON LAST THURSDAY

Death Comes To Union County Young Woman After Long Illness

Shirley Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Johnson, who live west of Akron in Union county, S.D., departed this life at the Worrall Hospital in Rochester, Minn., on Monday morning, February 19, 1951, at 2:30 o'clock. She was 23 years, 7 months and. 26 days of age.

Shirley Jean Johnson was born near Akron, Iowa, June 24, 1927. She was a graduate of the Akron High school with the Class of 1945. She was employed previous to her illness at the Lutheran Hospital and at the State Finance Company in Sioux City.

During infancy she was baptized as a member, of the local Immanuel Lutheran church, and later she was confirmed with the Class of 1942. Her faith in her Saviour was increasingly a source of inner strength, undying courage and endurance during an illness of over three and one-half years. Also, it was the well-spring of a charming personality that radiated a smile even when pain was sharpest. She was always interested in others and delighted in doing loving deeds of kindness. She never failed to express gratitude for even the smallest favor shown her.

She leaves to mourn her untimely departure, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Johnson; two brothers, Darwin and Gordon; a nephew, Gerald, Dairwin Johnson; her grandmother, Mrs. Clara Miller, all of Akron; her great-grandfather, Peter Kallsen, of Le Mars; many other relatives and a great number of friends, by all of whom her memory will long be cherished.

Funeral services were held at the Immanuel Lutheran church on Thursday afternoon, February 22, preceded by a brief service at the home Pastor David J. Roy officiating. There was a large attendance at the service.

Music was furnished by a male quartet, composed of Arden Johnson, Clifford E. Johnson, Harry Nelson and J.R. Shoulberg, accompanied by Mrs. Henning Shoulberg. They sang, "Sometime We'll Understand" and "Abide With Me." The Scripture lesson was taken from the Twentieth Psalm, which was Shirley's favorite.

Palllearers were cousins of the deceased, Russell Anderson, Stanley Anderson, Marlin Johnson, Gordon Kilstrom, Glen Milbrodt and Norman Morehead.

Interment was in Riverside cemetery.
