DEATH COMES TO PETER JOHNSON LAST THURSDAY

Last Rites: Held Here Tuesday For Esteemed Former Akron Man

Peter Johnson departed this life last Thursday evening, October 18, 1951, at the Immanuel Lutheran Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of his passing he was 82 years, 1 month and 12 days of age.

Peter Johnson was born in Mossibo, Elfsborg Lan, Sweden; September 6, 1869. During early infancy he was baptized and during youth became a communicant member of the Lutheran church in his native land by the rite of confirmation.

In the spring of 1893 he immigrated to American shores and came immediately to Le Mars, Iowa. In that vicinity he worked for about six years until he moved to a farm in the Akron vicinity. He continued farming until about 1920 when he moved into Akron. He lived here until 1939 when he entered the Immanuel Lutheran Home for the Aged in Omaha, Nebr. There he remained until his death.

He was united in marriage with Miss Anna Peterson, May. 2, 1900. To this union were born five children, of whom four survive. A son, Walter Leonard, passed away in February, 1914. His wife was called by death in March, 1918.

When the Immanuel Lutheran church was organized, September 30, 1910, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Johnson were charter members. Mr. Johnson was a member of the first board of deacons and served- in that capacity for a number of terms. When the congregation in 1913 decided to build a church, Mr. Johnson was elected to serve on the building committee. He with four others had previously advanced money to purchase the present site of the church. Later as a member of the board of trustees he served as church treasurer for a number of years. He was also active in the Immanuel Sunday school, serving as superintendent and Bible class teacher. He continued as an interested member of Immanuel until his death. His active participation in so many phases of the Immanuel Congregation's life, particularly during the early years of its history and his keen interest in the congregation's progress is clear witness of the great part that Christ and the church had in his life.

He leaves to mourn his departure: Three daughters, Mrs. Helga Johnson, of Floodwood, Minnesota; Mrs. Astrid Franzen, of Sioux City, Iowa; and Mrs. Elsie Pearson, of Lake Wales, Florida; one son, Waldon, of Gig Harbor, Washington; one sister, Mrs. Sophie Nelson, of Oakland, California, one brother, Emil Johnson, of Akron; nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held here Tuesday afternoon at the Immanuel Lutheran church, preceded by a brief service at the Lewison Funeral Home, with Pastor David J. Roy officiating. Mrs. Albert Carlson, of Sioux City, accompanied by Mrs. Henning Shoulberg, sang "Fade, Fade Each Earthly Joy" and "There Is A Land That Is Fairer Than Day." Pallbearers were Fred 0. Claesson, Albert Carlson, of Sioux City; Harry Johnson, John Frisk, Henning Shoulberg and Frank Johnson. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were: Walden Johnson, of Gig Harbor, Wash., Mr. and Mrs. Axel Johnson, of Floodwood, Minn., Mr. and, Mrs. Elmer Farnzen: and sons, Kenneth and Wayne, of Sioux City, Ia., Miss Lorraine Johnson and Arvid Johnson, of Evanston, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Johnson and daughters, Sylvia and Kay, of Sheldon, Ia., Mrs. Chas. Rowe, Mrs. Earl Love, Mrs. Henry Eilks, Gloria Harms, and Mrs. Joe Boysen, all of Le Mars; Mrs. George Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. J. Albert Carlson, Mr. and Mrs. J. Albert Anderson, Mr. Elmer Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Faye Shearer, all of Sioux City; Mrs. Ed. Nelson, of Merrill, Mrs. Anna Barnes, of Minneapolis, Minn.
