Ethel F. Cottrell, 91, of Sioux City died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Nickolas Becker officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mrs. Cottrell was born Dec. 19, 1910, in Hinton, Iowa, the daughter of William J. and Hattie (Walker) Brownlee. She moved with her family to Sibley, Iowa, when she was 3 years old. She was educated in the Sheldon, Iowa, and Sibley high schools. She came to Sioux City when she was 17 years old and later graduated from National Business Training College. She then worked for Worth-Mor Feed Mills as a bookkeeper and secretary for seven years and then for Martin and Kettels Flour Mills until her marriage.
She married William J. Cottrell on Oct. 15, 1932, in Sioux City. In 1941, the couple started Allied Office Machines. In 1950, she started a printing and direct mail advertising service, in conjunction with her husband's office machine company. In 1975, the office machine end of the business was sold, and she continued to operate the printing and direct mail service under the name of Allied Litho and Mailing Service, until she sold out in October 1976. Mr. Cottrell passed away on Sept. 14, 1986, in Sioux City.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She was a former member of the Soroptomist Club, Credit Women's International, Lioness Club, ABWA and the Press Club.
She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Donna and Jim Johnson of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Mitchell Johnson and his wife, Nicole, Melody and her husband, Brad Bentson, and Carrie Johnson; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers.
Pallbearers will be Tom Pierce, Jim Ortman, Matt Walker, Gary Johnson, Otto Rademacher and Jerry Wheeler.
