SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Joan J. Cowell, 70, of South Sioux City died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at River Hills Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Jeff Heil officiating. Burial will be in Stanton Township Cemetery, rural Hinton, Iowa. Visitation will be 2 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Mrs. Cowell was born March 9, 1931, in Homer, Neb., the daughter of Charles F. and Sula (Roberts) Stansberry. She was formerly employed with IBP.

She was a member of River Hills Church.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, the Rev. Michael and Susan Bales of Muscatine, Iowa, and Russell and Kelley Worden of South Sioux City; two daughters, Debora Glover of Sioux City, and Lisa and her husband, Bill Wright of Byfield, Mass.; two brothers, Roy Stansberry of Sioux City, and Charles Stansberry of South Sioux City; five sisters, Vera Stansberry, Edith Hiatt and Thelma Queen, all of South Sioux City, and Pat Beach and Lois Griggs, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Lamont; two brothers, Gale and Morris; four sisters, Norma Archer, Lela Bartolozzi, Eunice Robb and Erma Stansberry; a grandson, Joshua Worden; and a great-grandson, Brenden Burns.

Pallbearers will be Aren Burns, Jarrod Worden, Matt, Marc and Mike Bales and Matt Rowe. Honorary pallbearers will be Missy Burns, Mindy Rowe, Amanda and Katie Worden.
