Last Rites Held For J . H. Halbach
Services were held in St. Anthony's Catholic
Church Thursday, April 12, for J. H. Halbach, who died Sunday evening, April 8 at Ward Memorial hospital.
Solemn High Requiem Mass was sung by Right Reverend Monsignor A. A. Halbach of Webster
City, assisted by Father J. Koenig of Primghar,
Father J. Cullen of Clare and Father Keleher of Sioux Rapids. The sermon was delivered byFather
Koenig.
Pallbearers were six nephews: Donald Shae and Robert Cassidy, both of Primghar, John Cassidy of Minneapolis, Minn., Robert Halbach of
Clinton, Iowa and Dennis Halbach of Spencer, Iowa.
Joseph Herman Halbach was born in Cherokee
County, Iowa, March 26, 1892, the son of Joseph
H. and Kathrina Schueller Halbach. He was the oldest of ten children. In 1896 he moved with
his parents to O'Brien county and settled on the farm in Summit Township. His father was first resident farmer on the farm where Joe grew to manhood. Joe graduated from Primghar
High. School" in 1909. Thereafter his seven brothers and two sisters followed his steps in attending and graduating from the same high
school.
He was married to Loretta Cassidy on October 7, 1914. He farmed in Dale township until he moved to Primghar in 1924, when he formed an
association with his brother-in-law, Vincent J. Cassidy, under the name of Cassidy and Halbach. This firm operated a hardware and implement business until 1954, when the implement
business was sold. In 1955, Joe retired from the hardware business. Joe was elected a member of the town council of Primghar in 1925L which office lie held until 1934, when he was
appointed mayor to succeed the late Wm. H. Downing in the latter's death. Thereafter,
he was elected to hold office continuously,
except for one two-year term, until the time of his death on Sunday, April 8th.
He was active in all civic work, being for many years O'Brien County Bond Chairman.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta, two daughters, Jeanette, a Postulant at Vicory
Knoll convent in Huntington, Ind., and Jocelyn
Mary, a student at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; one sister, Frances (Mrs.
Thomas Gray) of Calumet; and seven brothers, Albert J. of Fort Dodge; Frank M. of Primghar;
Edward C. and Lawrence J. of Clinton; Raymond J. of Omaha, Nebr.; Clarence H. of Spencer and
Alvin F. of Chicago, 111., arid thirteen nephews and fourteen nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Louise,(Mrs. John Shae.)
