Herman Kluender Dies After Week's Illness, Last Rites Wednesday

Funeral services for Herman Carl Kluender, 73, well-known Paullina resident, were held this Wednesday afternoon at the Kluender home at 212 South Main Street and at the First Presbyterian church. The Rev L. R. Middents officiated there, and at graveside services at Prairie View cemetery.

Mr. Kluender became ill last Monday, complaining of severe headaches. He died as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage early Monday morning at the Community Memorial hospital at Sheldon.

Born on June 12, 1882, near Germantown, he was the youngest son of thirteen children of Fred and Louisa Kluender. He was confirmed in St. John's Lutheran church at Germantown, and married Emma Appeldorn on Dec. 24, 1909, at Paullina. Six children were born to the couple, one of whom preceded. He was also preceded by his parents and seven brothers and sisters.

Surviving are the widow, two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Hinkley and Mrs. Waldemar (Louise) Fegebank of Paullina, three sons, Alvin and Earl of Hartley and Howard of Des Moines; also 18 grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Sophia Davis of Sioux City, Mrs. Mathilda Guenhagen of Columbus, Neb., and Mrs. Clara Riedemann of Paullina, and two brothers, Fred Kluender of Mora, Minn., Ed Kluender, St Paul.

He farmed in O'Brien County until 1915, and the family moved to Minnesota, living there until 1935. He then returned to O'Brien County, farming near Sanborn until 1944, when he retired and moved to Paullina.

Pallbearers were Herman Hattermann, William Holck; Hans Linder, Ina Dornbusch Jr., John Holck and Delmar Laue. Mrs. Harold DeJong sang, accompanied by Mrs. Marvin Smith. In charge of flowers were Mrs. Delmar Laue, Mrs. Hans Linder.
