Howard Stacy Medland (1883-1944)

Howard Stacy Medland was born on a farm near Hartley on December 2, 1883, the son and only child of William S. and Gertrude L. Medland. He operated a grocery store for many years in Hartley.

December, 1912, he was united in marriage with Mildred L. Koon of Sheldon. They made their home in Hartley until September, 1922, when they moved to Sheldon where Howard was connected with the Western Grocery Company as a salesman, later being transferred by the same company to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1925, where the family have since made their home. The past two years he was salesman for the McKesson, Robbins Drug Company, with his territory in Saint Cloud and surrounding towns.

He was injured in a fall down a stairway at Saint Cloud, Minnesota, February 1st while calling on a customer there. He suffered a depressed fracture of the skull and injuries to the eye and shoulder, but after an operation was performed February 4, he was recovering nicely and was to be released from the Saint Cloud hospital on the 20th of February. He suddenly passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, February 18th at 10 o'clock.

The Elks Lodge of Saint Cloud, of hich he was a member, held their services in Saint Cloud Saturday afternoon and the remains were brought to the Werness Mortuary Sunday.

Services were held Tuesday morning at 10:30 and cremation took place Thursday morning. The ashes will be placed in the grave at Hartley in May beside the remains of his parents.

He leaves to mourn his departure his loving wife Mildred, one son, Robert B. Medland, one daughter, Dorothy Medland, his daughter-in-law, Joyce Medland, and three grandchildren, Melanie, Michael and Marshall Medland; two aunts, Mrs. Frankie Burlet of Sioux Falls and Mrs. Lillie Young of Nebraska, also his uncle, Mr. Richard Dimond of Earlville, Iowa, besides many friends in Hartley and Minneapolis. He was a member of the Minneapolis Council U.C.T. and of the Saint Cloud Brotherhood of Elks.
