Residents of Hartley were much surprised to learn of the death of Sig Medland. His son Howard came down after him about two weeks ago to take him to his home in Minneapolis. He passed away very suddenly Monday morning in the home of his son.

William Siegel Medland was born in Bloomington, Illinois, May 8, 1862, and passed away at the home of his son Howard in Minneapolis September 22, 1930. When a young child, he moved with his parents to Earlville, Iowa, and grew to young manhood there.

On February 2, 1883, he was united in marriage with Gertrude Dimond at Earlville, Iowa and March 1 of the same years they came to O'Brien county and settled on a farm south of Hartley, later moving into a new home in town.

He enjoyed good health until a few weeks ago, but was in bed only a few days. On September 13 he accompanied his son to Minneapolis at which place he passed away. His wife preceded him in death March 1, 1924.

Sig, as he was familiarly known around Hartley, had many friends in this community. He was a familiar figure of the streets of late years and always had a friendly greeting for everyone.

He leaves to mourn his loss his son, Howard, his daughter-in-law, his grandson Robert Medland, and his granddaughter, Dorothy Medland, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Luckenbill of Brookings, South Dakota, Mrs. W.A. Burlet of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Mrs. Thomas Young of Bozile Mills, Nebraska, and one brother, John Medland of Earlville, Iowa.

His sister, Mrs. Grace Sanders preceded him in death last February. He has a host of relatives and friends by whom he will be missed.

Funeral services were conducted in Hartley, Wesdnesday afternoon at the M.E. church with Rev. Welch in charge, and burial was made in Pleasant view cemetery.
