Coal Mine Accident, 1885 or 1888

I am trying to find some record of my great grandfather's death, which by family tradition is said to have been caused by a mine accident while he lived and worked in Albia, Iowa. The date of his death could have been in 1885 or in late 1887 or during the first 5 months of 1888. Does anyone know the history of the mines and possible accidents causing injury or death who could have this information? Name of Great Grandfather was James Rodney McBrayer or McBriar
