Mary L. Peterson, died on July 16, 2021, one day after her 85th birthday. She was a resident of Mapleton and Sioux City, but had spent the last nine years in the loving care of her daughter, Terri Shatter, and Terri’s husband, Phil Shatter, in Sunnyvale, Texas.

Mary was born July 15, 1936, in Mapleton, the daughter of Leo and Garnet Braden. Garnet Braden, died in a car accident when Mary was only 10, and Mary was then raised by her grandparents, Alvin and Ethel O’Connor.

She was a graduate of Mapleton High School, and married Raymond Kurth of Mapleton, and had four children from that marriage. They moved to the Sioux City area, where Mary worked for the Toy National Bank/Wells Fargo for over 35 years. She later married Harry Duane Peterson on February 14, 1983, and they were married for 29 years until Duane passed on May 24, 2012.

She is survived by her sister Jean and brother George, as well as her four children: Chuck (Conchita) Kurth, Ron (Jackie) Kurth, Terri (Phil) Shatter and Mark Kurth. She also has seven grandchildren (Christian, Max, Colton, Carlee, Felicia, Schylar, and Zachary) and one great grandchild (Wesley).

Mary was known for her quick wit and loving personality, as well as her outstanding card playing capabilities. We all fondly remember the family reunion we enjoyed in Texas on her 80th birthday, and California on her 83rd birthday.

Two services will be held for Mary. The first service was on July 20 at New Hope Funeral Home in Sunnyvale, Texas and the second will be held on Saturday, Aug. 14 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City with a visitation at 1 p.m. and service following at 2 p.m. Her ashes will be interred next to her late husband Harry Duane Peterson at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in her name to Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
