Lavone Lois Witzel, 83, of Castana, passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, September 23, 2021 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, with Reverend Christopher LaBoube officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1-3 p.m. (Please bring and wear masks). Burial will follow in the Center Cemetery, Castana. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa.

Lavone Lois Hasbrouck was born January 31, 1938 in rural Mapleton, the daughter of Raymond Manuel and Seffa Elizabeth (Baker) Hasbrouck. She grew up on a farm near Mapleton, and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1956.

Lavone married Hans George Witzel on January 6, 1957 in Mapleton. To this union six children were born, Carol, Mark, Donald, David, Brian, and Colleen. The couple moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1962. She raised her children and was a preschool teacher at ABC Preschool at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Las Vegas, Nevada from 1973-1986.

In 1986 Lavone and Hans moved back to Iowa on the family farm near Castana. She helped on the farm from bottle feeding calves to anything that needed done on the farm. She was a preschool teacher at Little Lambs Preschool at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Mapleton, from 1989-1997. She enjoyed teaching the children.

Lavone was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and served on the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League for many years.

Lavone enjoyed gardening her flowers and vegetables. She loved to cook, and she also wrote her own cookbook. She had the ability to remember everything; facts, birthdays; and all the memories about the kids. Lavone enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her two dogs, “Skeeter” and “Spike.”

Survivors include her husband of sixty-four years, Hans Witzel of Castana; her children, Carol (Bill) Pritchard of Mapleton, Mark Witzel of Pisgah, Donald (Deanna) Witzel of Danville, Illinois, David Witzel of Castana, Brian Witzel of Mapleton, and Colleen (Jim) Musson of Danville, Illinois; sixteen grandchildren, Jeremy (Courtney) Doucette, Justin Doucette, Troy Goudge, Christopher Witzel, Benjamin Witzel, Matthew Witzel, Daniel (Emma) Witzel, Robert (Halley) Witzel, Katie (Jason) Spencer, Brittney Witzel, Kyle Witzel, Bryson Witzel, Karli Witzel, Joshua (Ali) Hetzel, Elizabeth Sothen, and Adam Sothen; sixteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Retha (Richard) Bielenberg; two brothers, Jerry (Joanie) Hasbrouck, and Rick Hasbrouck; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.

Lavone was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Seffa (Baker) Hasbrouck; sister, Louise Stinton; and brothers, Jesse Hasbrouck, Wayne Hasbrouck, Morris Hasbrouck, and Lavone’s twin, Lenord, who died at three months old.
