She attended Little Sioux grade school and high school. When she was seventeen, she married Russell Dean Rounds and the couple moved to Corona, California, and they had Jeremiah Lynn. They came back and were also married in a Catholic Church. They moved to Pisgah, Iowa and every Summer Darlene helped hoe beans and shell corn. She later divorced in 1976.

She was a live in Certified Nurses Aide. She enjoyed cleaning, especially the kitchen. On the television she loved to watch Joel Osteen, Catholic Mass, and Gunsmoke. Darlene treasured her family, looking at photo albums, and birthday cards. They always made her happy. She cared for all her patients and didn’t retire until she was eighty-two, when she felt ill.
