14 April 2021Mark McDonald, 72, of Castana, Iowa, passed away Sunday, April 4, 2021 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 7:00 P.M. Friday, April 9, 2021 at the Rush Family Chapel, Onawa, Iowa with Jack Gibler officiating. (Please bring and wear masks). Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Friday, April 9, 2021 at the Rush Family Chapel, Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.
Mark Preston McDonald was born April 5, 1948 in Onawa, Iowa, the son of Laurel and Marie (Bartels) McDonald. He grew up in Castana, Iowa where he attended elementary school. Mark attended high school in Mapleton, Iowa.
Mark and Katherine Yanak were united in marriage on July 30, 1967 in Onawa, Iowa. The couple later divorced.
Mark worked as a meat cutter at various places including Safeway in Onawa, Iowa and Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Fiesta Foods in Mapleton, Iowa. He owned and operated his own locker in Onawa for several years. He also worked in the Monona County Sheriff’s office as a dispatcher and jailer. He served as a Reserve Monona County Deputy for a number of years. He also owned Mark’s Archery and Sporting Clay Range.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and shooting sporting clays. Mark loved to tell “Big Stories” while drinking Crown Royal. He loved training and raising bird dogs and was a supporter and member of Pheasants Forever.
He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Jennifer (Todd) Moore of Onawa, Iowa; a son and his wife, Shanon (Mary) McDonald of Onawa, Iowa; grandchildren, Blake (Katie) Moore, Gabe (Kasey) Moore, and Logan (Emalee Barton) Moore; great-grandchildren, Asher, Mason, Gracelyn, Everly, Ada, and Rhett; sister, Carla (Jeff) Fiscus; and several other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Laurel and Marie (Bartels) McDonald; and granddaughter, Hannah Stier.
Honorary Bearers will be Blake Moore, Gabe Moore, Logan Moore, Steven Hein, Barney Grant, and Dave Cartmill.
