Robert “Bob” D. McCracken, 89, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021 at his home in Onawa, Iowa.

A funeral service will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 7, 2021 at the Rush Family Chapel, Onawa, Iowa with Hospice Chaplain Dale Wolf officiating. (Please bring and wear masks). Burial will be in the Little Sioux Cemetery, Little Sioux, Iowa. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Thursday, May 6, 2021 at the Rush Family Chapel, Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Bob was born February 29, 1932 to Wilbur and Una (Mehrens) McCracken in Mondamin, Iowa. Bob was the oldest of four children. As a child, Bob helped his Dad on their family farm, enjoyed growing up with his siblings and school friends and he played baseball and basketball in high school. He graduated from Little Sioux High School in the Class of 1950.

Bob met Lois Jessie Layton in high school through sports and school activities. They were married on May 25, 1953. Bob and Lois made their first home in Omaha with a move to Council Bluffs back to Little Sioux and ultimately to Onawa, where they spent the majority of their life together. Bob and Lois welcomed their first child, Robert Steven on November 21, 1953 and their second child, Lori Ann (Beck) on July 23, 1956.

Bob enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and Lois attended and supported them as often as they could in every activity, they chose to be a part of. Bob and Lois also enjoyed traveling with friends and family. They saw much of the world together, traveling to places such as Alaska, Canary Islands, Jamaica, Hawaii, Europe, Mexico and many places in the United States. In 2003, Bob and Lois celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their family on a Caribbean cruise. Bob and Lois purchased a retirement home in Donna, TX, where they spent many winters enjoying friendships and hosting family and friends.

Bob spent over 50 years working in the concrete industry. He worked for and managed the Onawa “Clark Concrete” plant for much of those years. As the company sold to different owners during the years, Bob continued to work and manage quality control for Wilson Concrete Company, Lyman Richey and Gerholt Concrete Company in the southwest Iowa area.

Bob was a “Ford” man. A purchase of a 1963 Ford Thunderbird was a highlight for him. Though he did not get to enjoy as much as he would have liked, cruising in the Tbird, in the past couple of years, you’d find him in his garage, cleaning and buffing the car, occasional cruises to Blue Lake or out along the foothills and several Little Sioux Homecoming parades and car shows.

Bob is survived by his son, Steve (Peg) McCracken of Council Bluffs, Iowa; daughter, Lori (Jim) Beck of Onawa, Iowa; brother, Russell (Beverly) McCracken of Parker, Colorado; sister, Sylvia (Phil) Schaetzel of Hugo, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Jacob McCracken, Genesis Dunn, Matthew McCracken, Candace Chapman, Clint Thomsen, Samantha Bieler and Michaela Gray; ten great-grandchildren, Vance Chapman, Mila Chapman, Abigail McCracken, Conrad McCracken, Aven Dunn, Jonah Dunn, Gavin Bieler, Charlotte Bieler, William McCracken, Maisie McCracken; and baby McCracken due November 1, 2021.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife Lois of 66 years; his parents, Wilbur and Una McCracken; and his brother, Harold McCracken.

Memorials may be directed to the family for a charity of their choosing.
